Why I never grow tired of a good mystery.
A Story For The Ages
The stories of Sherlock Holmes date back to 1893 when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle first introduced the world to his eccentric detective. Every page seems to be just enough to make us ready for more. The cases were unique and the logic sound so that every man and woman could easily see clearly what at the start of the story they were in the dark. The stories have grown from books, to radio dramas, to movies, and now to streaming channels like Netflix.
Not Quite Squid Game
Although not as shocking as other content on Netflix there have been two iterations of the Sherlock Holmes story that I have had the enjoyment of watching as of late. The first was the “Inside Man” and the other “Enola Holmes 2”.
The Return Of Enola Holmes
If you missed the original “Enola Holmes” it would be worth your while to catch the first movie as it stands up well on its own but honestly I don’t think you would enjoy this new movie any less. Of course you know she survived the first flick since there is a second. Regardless, this movie is fun to watch with the whole family. For those that love the original character of Sherlock Holmes, this iteration played by Henry Cavill does a fair job of displaying the characteristic attention to detail that makes the Holmes character so interesting.
The titled heroine of the story of course is the little sister to Sherlock a Ms. Enola Holmes who has set out to be a great detective of her making. Her story weaves through a gritty London while keeping Sherlock’s story close at hand even while she closes in on a resolution to her case. Although for a majority of the movie I half expected Enola to channel some inner Eleven and vanquish her adversaries but with the help of family and friends she found resolutions to the most intriguing aspects of her cases. And maybe best of all the movie leaves us wanting more and giving us quite a hint that an Enola Holmes 3 may be in our futures
The other current Netflix hit that channels it’s own version of Sherlock Holmes is titled the “Inside Man”. The fact that Sherlock Holmes could sit in his armchair at 221b baker st and solve many of the cases that confounded the local police was always amazing to read. He was able to take the details that characters saw with their own eyes and process it in a way that after explained seemed so obvious but really it was only obvious to the most astute observers. In the “Inside Man” the character played by Stanley Tucci not only has this ability to put together pieces of information obtained second-hand he has no other choice since he is currently incarcerated on death row. I thought this setup for a story was a great device to force the details given to our problem solver to be the only data he has to work with and even with scant details he is able to piece together the facts of each case presented to him.
Although we will never get any more original stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle I think he would be happy to hear that each generation seems to still be enjoying his original creation or just as loveable iteration.
